What do you look forward to when you think about November?
I know that there is a downside, but I do love a good firework display and bonfire. There are lots of other things to enjoy too. This month the social events on offer in our villages include a jacket potato lunch in Narborough, a puzzle swap with refreshments in Pentney, a couple of ceilidhs in village halls, and even the first Christmas bazaar of 2024 in Castle Acre. You can probably add to my list.
In the midst of all this, November is dominated by remembrance. It starts with All Souls, when we remember all those who have died. Then, of course, there is Remembrance Day itself.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month we pause to remember all those who paid the ultimate price of war. There are no words in these two minutes of silence. There are no words to make sense of the ghastliness of war. Just a quiet determination to stand with those who mourn. There has never been a Remembrance Sunday when the whole world has been at peace. The Sunday nearest to Remembrance Day is kept as Remembrance Sunday. This year it will be Sunday the tenth. Do consider joining one of the services of Remembrance organized in conjunction with the Royal British legion. There is one at Castle Care and one at Narborough. Both start at 10.50.
So, this November, let’s pray earnestly for world peace as we also hold our service families in our prayers. From Remembrance Sunday onwards, there will be a Peace Prayer Space in church to help you do so. Angela
